For a while there I misunderstood the notion of a workhouse versus an orphanage in āBlack Butler/Kuroshitsuji.ā I mistakenly took them the same. Though both institutions were wretched and subjected to cruelty and hierarchy, workhouses donāt exist anymore. Whereas orphanages are still relevant and still part of the modern society (fortunately or unfortunately). Poorhouses already existed in England throughout the centuries. The first workhouse was built in 1835 in Abingdon, Oxfordshire under the Poor Law Amendment Act. They officially closed in 1930 after the Local Government Act in previous year. Though a few still thrived till the 1960s. These were now converted to hospitals and care homes. Their existence coincided with the growing number of paupers living in England in the Victorian era.
There were several ways of accommodations for those ātoo poorā during that time. From doss houses to temporary lodging houses, anonymous living quarters, to living in a workhouse to, last but not the least, staying on the streets. London was a filthy, stinking witness to those who couldnāt afford the standard of living either by chance or intent (the sick, the old, the alcoholics, prostitutes, the orphans, the jobless, etc.). The Southwell Workhouse was said to be one of a kind as it was the model workhouse, lovingly well maintained by its inmates. In fact, one can visit it and be informed of the life living in that kind of institution.
In the manga and anime (Chapter 35: In the Afternoon, The Butler, Executor/Book of Circus, Episode 10) Yana T painted an ideal picture where her troupe of Noahās Circus Ark first-stringers had a ābetter lifeā in a workhouse after living roughly on the streets. Joker went on to become Baron Kelvinās butler/personal assistant and Beast and the rest as the domestic help until they were asked to form a circus group. Joker still believed that children still resided in the workhouse until he fell into a harsh realisation during the course of Ciel and Sebastianās summary execution that the doctor, with the permission of the Baron, made an experiment on the remaining children.
In reality, this was quite the opposite. According to Hallie Rubenholdās recollection of the forgotten victims of Jack the Ripper, āThe Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper,ā Londoners would rather stay for a night on Embankment or camp on Trafalgar Square than be stuck in a grim workhouse. She recounted the tale of an old couple whose husband was used to be working in a theatre as a musical director when an injury occurred, found himself soon to be jobless. They couldnāt pay the rent and lost the privilege to live in dignity.
āThe thought of throwing themselves upon the mercy of their local workhouse was too shameful and frightening even to consider.ā
They opted to live on the street sleeping on one of the stone benches of the square.
Families were also separated once entering the premises of a workhouse. Furthermore, to be able to stay in a Victorian workhouse one should be willing to work, demeaning it might be, in exchange for lodging and nutrition.
The original scheme of classification of inmates categorized females under 16 as 'girls' and males under 13 as 'boys', with those aged under seven forming a separate class. It probably came as a surprise to the Commissioners that, by 1839, almost half of the workhouse population (42,767 out of 97,510) were children. ( x )
The men, women, and children were all housed separately. Children were only allowed to spend a brief amount of time a week with their parents. However, most children in a workhouse were orphans.
Men and women (inmates) were expected to work 10 hours a day seven days a week. It was so demeaning that people chose it as a last resort.
Both men and women had to work doing something called oakum. This was a task where old ropes were unpicked for many hours at a time, so that the threads could be mixed with tar on board ships to waterproof sailing vessels.
⦠Men were expected to stone breaking, grinding corn, work in the fields, chopping wood. While women did the laundry, cleaning, scrubbing walls and floors, spinning, and weaving.
⦠Girls had some lessons, but generally they were taught needlework and other domestic skills so that they could become a maid or servant at the age of fourteen. ( x )
One famous inmate of St. Asaph Union Workhouse, Henry Morton Stanley, who found the missing explorer Dr. David Livingstone, only had this description for his former accommodation: āA house of torture.ā
One way or another, Yana Tās imagined ending of her own version of a workhouse was not that far off. Ciel looking at the ruins and then having a breakdown.
There are a crap ton of references to literature in Kuroshitsuji, and after re-reading all of Kuro I was really motivated to make a giant list of the literary references.
So I did.
The Admirable History of PossessionĀ (Sebastian Michaelis)
In the 1600s, a French inquisitor named Sebastien Michaelis co-wroteĀ The Admirable History of Possession and Conversion of a Penitent Woman. It included a classification/hierarchy of demons that is sometimes referenced in esoteric literature. Iām guessing Yana named Sebastian after this guy.
Famous Poets (Snakes)
All of Snakeās snakes are named after famous canonical writers.Ā
These include, but are not limited to, John Webster, John Donne, Emily Bronte, Oscar Wilde, John Keats, William Wordsworth, and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
Peter and WendyĀ (Peter and Wendy from the Circus arc)
Peter and Wendy was originally a play/novel from the early 1900s and (as youāve probably guessed) was the source material for the 1953 Disney film, Peter Pan. Peter and Wendy from Kuro have a medical condition where their bodies literallyĀ ānever grow up,ā which is something that happens in Peter Pan, but in that story itās a result of magic instead of biology. Peter and Wendy from Kuro are also trapeze performers, which is the closest thing in a circus to flying.
SherlockĀ HolmesĀ (The Phantomhive Mansion Murder Arc)
This might seem pretty obvious and yeah it kind of is, but there are a lot of fun little details that relate to Sherlock Holmes and Arthur Conan Doyle.
In chapter 39 of Kuro, Arthur admits to Ciel that he would rather write historical novels instead of detective fiction, but his editors told him historical novels wouldnāt sell. Ciel then says that Arthur should just make a name writing mysteries and that after that the history novels will sell based on his name alone. Arthur Conan Doyle has gained quite the reputation as the guy who wrote mysteries and got sick of them while no one cared about his historical novels, so this conversation is actually pretty funny.
Some of the side characters in the Murder arc have names based on characters from the original Sherlock stories. Irene Diaz shares a first name with Irene Adler (both characters are opera singers) and Patrick Phelps shares a last name with Percy Phelps (both of whom have nervous dispositions).
In chapter 45, Sebastian (as Jeremy) points out that Arthur has written a bunch of story ideas on the inside of his sleeves. The words written in his sleeves include āpearlā (āThe Adventure of the Six Napoleonsā) and āsignā (The Sign of Four). Thereās alsoĀ āIndiaā andĀ āsecret room,ā but Iām not sure what specific stories those are referring to.
Fun bonus fact: Jeremy Rathbone (aka Sebastian in disguise) is named after 2 actors: Jeremy Brett and Basil Rathbone. Both of them played Sherlock Holmes at one point in their careers.Ā
Beetonās/PunchĀ (magazines that Ciel reads)
In chapter 39 Arthur mentions that Ā āA Study in Scarletā was published in Beetonās magazine, and that heās surprised that someone in a position of nobility would read such a magazine. Beetonās actually exists andĀ āA Study in Scarletā was first published in Beetonās in November of 1887.
In response to Arthurās surprise, Ciel mentions that he also reads Punch. This was also a real magazine, but what makes it weird is that one of the editors of Punch was a guy named Edmund Knox. One of Edmundās brothers was a guy named Ronald Knox, who wrote detective fiction.

Propertiusā āElegiaeāĀ (The poem being taught at Weston)
In the public school arc, Sebastian is teaching a Latin poem that relates to some themes and events in the Kuro universe. Hereās a link to a more in depth post about the quote.Ā
Micah Clarke (novel that Ciel buys)
In chapter 85 (the one where everyone goes shopping), Ciel notices that Arthur wrote a historical novel called Micah Clarke. This was an actual novel by Arthur Conan Doyle from 1889. Itās also hilarious that Ciel complains about the historical novel because he wants Arthur to just write more mysteries. Wow.
The Wizard of OzĀ (Sieglinde Sullivan)Ā
(This one took me forever to get because I could never pronounce her first name properly).
In German,Ā āSieglindeā is pronouncedĀ āSee-glinda,ā which reminded me of Glinda the good witch from The Wizard of Oz. At first I thought that might be a coincidence, but then I realized thatās sheās also known as theĀ āGreen Witch,ā which calls to mind the Wicked Witch of the West. Furthermore, her residence is the Emerald Castle, which is possibly a reference to the Emerald City.Ā
Also, the werewolf stuff takes place in southern Germany (Glinda was the good witch of the south).
(Maybe Wolfram is her little dog too!)
Fenian Cycle (Finnyās name)
In chapter 100, thereās a flashback where we see Ciel naming Finny after the lead character in a book titled Fenian Cycle: Celtic Mythology. The Fenian Cycle is a real story thatās part of Irish mythology and, just as Ciel says, the lead character was named for his blonde hair.Ā
OthelloĀ (Othello the reaper)
Othello is a Shakespeare play (my personal favourite Shakespeare play by the by) in which the title character is tricked into thinking that his wife was having an affair and murders her in a fit of jealous rage (the person who tricked him, Iago, convinced him that this was the best course of action). Like 5 minutes after he kills her itās revealed that she didnāt cheat on him and he just fell for a really elaborately set up lie. Othello kills himself after discovering the truth.Ā
Yeahā¦I think itās fairly easy to figure out that Othello (in the play) has a parallel to a character who we know committed suicide at one point. TBH this is my favourite reference in all of Kuro because we can kind of guess the characterās backstory based on his name.
Side note: Othello (the Kuro character) works in forensics, which is fitting since the field of forensics involves finding hard evidence to prove guilt or innocence. Shakespeareās Othello had to rely on sight, verbal information, and assumptions, which led to him falsely accusing his wife of cheating on him.
Other stuff: In chapter 14, Ciel has a nightmare involving PoeāsĀ āThe Ravenā and the early part of the circus arc mentions the Pied Piper. Both of these are well-known/explained in the story, so I didnāt feel the need to write a whole thing about each of them.Ā
If you noticed anything missing, please add it to the post! (Although make note that these are only the literary references. There are like 10,000 historical references in Kuro and Iām not experienced enough in history to notice all of them, so those can be another post.)
I actually think the best way for Soma to "avenge" on RCiel is for him to find out the twins' issues, realising RCiel is just like past him to Mina, and actually forgiving him: like I want to see Soma telling R!Ciel off right into his face that he's just an immature and insecure child who struggles and failed to control his beloved brother and has no worth to be avenged on, then return to Bengal after claiming he'll always be his little brother's friend no matter how pissed off RC might be...
Hey Anon! Nah, nah, as much as I want Soma to become our!Cielās Agni, I really hope he helps taking real!Cielās operation down and wonāt forgive him.
To explain: I definitely agree with you that, even though the main theme of this series is revenge, it is slowly demonstrated to be a painful and dangerous path that wonāt bring any good, even less comfort or solace.Ā
Therefore, our!Ciel, Soma⦠following the revenge path will only bring them more pain, in a similar fashion to UT who wonāt be able to move on and heal by focusing on the past (bringing back dead loved ones) rather than on the present/future (saving our!Ciel from Seb and protecting the rest of them++).Ā
Thatās why I agree with you that itās not good development for Soma to be the one killing the twin out of revenge for Agni, simply because he indeed will gain much more solace by helping our!Ciel (ābecoming his Agniā) with realizing that he belongs with his family and friends as who he is.Ā
In other words,Ā we donāt know what Soma understands about the current situation yet. However, because revenge brings nothing good, trying to achieve it would lead him into a dark abyss that he probably wonāt come back from.Ā
That doesnāt mean that Soma has to forgive real!Ciel though. Agniās death was unnecessary, unfair and extremely violent. Besides, real!Ciel is an antagonist who, because heās dead, is far beyond redemption. Therefore, the narrative wonāt benefit from anyone forgiving him.Ā
I hope I managed to explain properly. Thanks for passing by and have a nice day. :))
Iāve had this theory in mind for a while but after a few of the recent chapters I decided this theory might be very possible.
First off on the cover page of Chapter 132 we can see Vincent reading this book called āFenian Cycleā to the twins.
The Fenian cycle is a collection of short stories centering around this character called Fionn mac Cumhaill (his name is translated to Fionn in modern Irish but was also known as Find and Finn in old Irish) and his warriors the Fianna. Basically, Fionn is the son of the the late Cumhaill (the former leader of the Fianna) and was always on the run and in hiding as a child from the men who slain his father. The current leader of the Fianna did not want Fionn to take his rightful ownership as the leader of the Fianna. This can parellel with how Vincent was slaughtered and how Our Ciel was always seen as the weaker and timid child compared to Real Ciel who was depicted as the braver and stronger of the two. Not to mention Real Ciel isĀ the rightful heir to the Watchdog title and the Earl of Phantomhive, not Our Ciel. It is also worth noting that in the recent chapters where Real Ciel has mysteriously and grandiosely reappeared he seems to have this underlying vendetta to get his title back. To make things simpler, itās as if Real Ciel is trying to 'stealā Our Cielās 'titleā as the Queenās Watchdog and although he is the rightful heir, Yana has made us all read through and experience Our Ciel carrying out the Watchdog duty so in a way, we are able to empathise with him as being the 'rightfulā person to do this job and that this duty 'rightfullyā belongs to him.
What follows from the story is that Fionn showcases how great and omnipotent he really is and eventually regains his leadership of the Fianna and spends the rest of the story roaming Ireland, carrying out the duties of the Fianna. This parallels greatly with Kuroshitsuji as Our Ciel proves he is capable of the Watchdog title and being an earl. He is calculating, dexterous, and vigilant. And we as readers watch as he masterfully carries out the Watchdog duties throughout each arc.
What Iād like to point out next is this:
Notice that look of surprise on Our Cielās face in the left hand corner panel when he sees Finny. I interpreted this as Our Ciel seeing a reflection of himself (or his past self) in Finny somehow. Both of them were kidnapped and locked up and used as 'lab ratsā for heinous, nefarious reasons.
I think Our Ciel also recognised the distant, faraway look in Finnyās eyes as somebody who has gone through an equally heartwrenching, dark experience as he has.
Granted, they both also watched as their loved ones/close friends were brutally murdered right before their very eyes.
This was Finny when he watched a doctor gun down two of his fellow inmates:
And this is Our Ciel watching his twin brother, Real Ciel (whom he seems to have a very close relationship with based on the flashback chapters) getting stabbed right before him:
I found it really interesting how similar Yana drew both of these panels when showing how both these characters witness the murdering of their loved ones/close friends (especially the eye panels where she highlighted the pure shock in them).Ā
There are other interesting parallels that could possibly hint that Our Cielās name is actually Finnian.Ā Both Finny and Our Ciel were branded (one with a slave mark and the other with a tattoo) to indicate whom they belonged to.
And in this sense, it shows how both were being treated as mere objects instead of actual human beings.
Moreover, one compelling fact is that both Our Ciel and Finny were theĀ only onesĀ to survive their horrendous ordeal (Iām not taking Real Ciel into account because as of now we are unsure as to whether he actually survived or was revived or is some form of developed Bizarre Doll, although I would place my bet on the latter as there is no possible indication whatsoever that he couldāve survived). In addition to this, in order to escape from their cruel captors they both sought to killing them.
This was the doctor that shot Finnyās fellow inmates:
And I think this panel speaks for itself:
So I assume this was one of the reasons why Our Ciel spared Finnyās life on that day and hired him as a Phantomhive servant. Finny reminded Our Ciel of himself (or again, his past self) in terms of how they were both victims of human greed and savagery.
I found other interesting links that could possibly hint at Our Cielās name being Finnian. One of them is how both Our Ciel and Finny are caring, selfless individuals who tend to think about the people around them first rather than themselves (in Our Cielās case, I suppose this trait was more dominant before the kidnapping and the whole cult event that ensued).
Also, Our Ciel was depicted as a naĆÆve, wide-eyed innocent child which is basically Finny in a nutshell.
And hereās a bonus picture of a̶ ̶c̶u̶t̶i̶e̶ Our Ciel getting really mad because Real Ciel told him that it was silly to believe in something he hadnāt seen before (and if you do believe in Santa then by all means you do you).
What really striked me is how similar Finny is compared to the younger version of Our Ciel. Iāve already cited the evidence as shown above but this revelation only further strengthens my belief that Cielās possible name could be Finnian.
I think itās also worth mentioning that out of all the servants Finny seems to be the closest to Our Ciel and remember, Finny was the only one whoĀ saw through Real Ciel when he first entered the manor.
I also find it interesting how Finny was the only one that Our Ciel allowed to be near him and to tend to him during the Emerald Witch Arc.Ā
During this time Our Ciel had broken down completely and reverted into the part of himself whom he vowed heād never be anymore. So whyĀ was Finny the onlyĀ person who was allowed to be near Our Ciel during his extreme mental breakdown? Even Sebastian whom Our Ciel seems to 'trustā the most was rejected and thrown aside. Well, Iād like to think that was because Our Ciel could relate to Finny in some way. Since Iāve mentioned how similar younger version of Our Ciel and Finny actually are, considering how Our Ciel has relapsed into his 'oldā self, 'the one who died on the altarā, Iād assume he found comfort in Finny becauseĀ Finny represented him. He allowed Finny to stay because Finny could understand and empathise with him. Kind, innocent, selfless, and caring. These were all prevalent traits Our Ciel possessed before he was tortured by the cult. And these are all the traits that Finny possesses afterĀ he was rescued from the lab (granted, Iām sure Finny had kindness and a sense of closeness with his fellow inmates but these characteristics did not have the opportunity to grow or nurture until he was rescued by Our Ciel). Whatās also interesting is how Yana illustrates Our Ciel and Finnyās relationship being far more prominent than with the other Phantomhive servants.Ā
With the way this is worded, I can only assume it was Our Ciel who actually invited Finny and not vice versa so this shows that he feels comfortable in Finnyās presence. Again we are presented with parallels between these two characters and Iād like to think that itās not all just a coincidence.Ā
1) Iām probably being a little too far-fetched here but both Our Ciel and Finny had injections during their time in captivity.
I know itās kind of a āSo what?ā point but knowing how Yana loves to add in obviously ridiculous and ridiculously obvious hints I thought this was worth taking note.
2) Take a look at this panel.
Judging by how Our Ciel says āUmā¦ā before stating his name I assume he hasnāt prepared himself for a situation like the one unfolding before him to occur. Also, he was unprepared for the first test that he had to pass through in order to become recruited as one of the circus members. He had no idea as to how or when Sebastian would help him until his darts were surprisingly hitting the target after every single throw. This means that Ciel was utterlyĀ and completelyĀ unaware of how things would play out when he arrived. So, back to my original statement, the fact that he paused and THEN claimed his name was Finnian could be an instinctive and reflex statement as again, he was caught off guard and responded with the first thing that came to his mind. Why Finnian? Perhaps because that was his name?
Then we have Joker responding with, āThatās a grand name,ā and we know for a fact that Vincent mentioned this:
The fact that Joker says 'grandā, not 'beautifulā or 'niceā, could indicate that even he himself has not heard of the name often (if ever) and is amazed by how a mere 'pageboyā could possess such a name. Moreover, the word 'grandā itself has royal connotations to it, giving one the impression of something majestic and glorious just like how the Phantomhives are perceived as.
So there you have it! Of course, this is all mere speculation and nothing is confirmed, some of the points made could also be bias on my part so you may take this with a grain of salt. As always, you are free to tell me your own opinions on this if you want! Thanks for reading~
A fanart of these two adorable girls, Elizabeth Midford carrying Sieglinde Sullivan from Kuroshitsuji. It inspired me to make this illustration in the scene of Cruise Liner Arc where Lizzy volunteer to carry Ciel at her back Then I suddenly think about the friendship between Sieglinde and Lizzy. I thought why not Lizzy carry in a piggyback style Sieglinde? I suppose that will make them unladylike but I still think that style has a feel of childish innocence in it specially that Sieglinde is younger than Lizzy .We know Lizzy ,her strength is inhuman so carrying Sieglinde is a piece of cake. I also got carried away by drawing Elizabethās dress and itās really hard to draw Sullyās skirtās fold .It took me a bit of time sketching it hehehe

i reread black butler a couple weeks ago and remembered just how good it is. iāve been keeping up with the manga for years but it had been a while since i did a full reread (last time that i reread it was before The Big Reveal) so it was super fun to pick up on all the foreshadowing this time around and revisit cielās very extensive wardrobe
After losing unlimited access to Phantom sweets O!ciel needs to collect his daily dose of sugar himself.
And if you don't give him a treat he'll call Sebastian.
The only right costume for Snake is a Medusa from Greek methodology and you can't convince me otherwise. (Also I've subconsciously drawn him in mark brunet artstyle...)
They just love each other
