My Plans for This Week: 2/27 - 3/5

Inspired by @gritsandbrits' 9/9 - 9/15 week plans post from 2019

I decided to do this after my last weekend plans didn't go too well, as I've only managed to two of the things of my weekend plans list 2/24 - 2/26. Those two being watching @rainbott's Spellmania series on their YouTube channel and watching Mindy Kaling's Velma on watchcartoononline.tv while also writing down ideas for my Velma rewrite on Google Docs. Plus, it felt like an episode in a show where there's too much crammed into a single or few episodes. So, I decided to do these plans I didn't get to do this week, at least hopefully, that is. If not, then next week it is.

Also, today's my 19th birthday!!! Happy Birthday to Me!!! :) ^^

Fanfiction Authors: HEADS UP

(Non-authors, please RB to signal boost to your author friends!)

An astute reader informed me this morning that one of my fics (Children of the Future Age) had been pirated and was being sold as a novel on Amazon:

(And they weren't even creative with their cover design. If you're going to pirate something that I spent a full year of my life writing, at least give me a pretty screenshot to brag about later. Seriously.)

I promptly filed a DMCA complaint to have it removed, but I checked out the company that put it up -- Plush Books -- and it looks like A LOT of their books are pirated fic. They are by no means the only ones doing this, either -- the fact that """publishers""" can download stories from AO3 in ebook format and then reupload them to Amazon in just a few clicks makes fic piracy a common problem. There are a whole host of reasons why letting this continue is bad -- including actual legal risk to fanfiction archives -- but basically:

IF YOU ARE A FANFIC AUTHOR WITH LONG AND/OR POPULAR WORKS, PLEASE CHECK AMAZON TO SEE IF YOUR STORIES HAVE BEEN PIRATED.

You can search for your fics by title, or by text from the description (which is often just copied wholesale from AO3 as well). If you find that someone has stolen your work and is selling it as their own, you can lodge a DMCA complaint (Amazon.com/USA site; other countries have different systems). If you haven't done this before, it's easy! Here's a tutorial:

HOW TO FILE A COPYRIGHT COMPLAINT FOR STOLEN WORK ON AMAZON.COM:

First, go to this form. You'll need to be signed into your Amazon account.

Select the radio buttons/dropdown options (shown below) to indicate that you are the legal Rights Owner, you have a copyright concern, and it is about a pirated product.

Enter the name of your story in the Name of Brand field.

In the Link to the Copyrighted Work box, enter a link to the story on AO3 or whatever site your work is posted on.

In the Additional Information box, explain that you are the author of the work and it is being sold without your permission. That's all you really need. If you want, you can include additional information that might be helpful in establishing the validity of your claim, but you don't have to go into great detail. You can simply write something like this:

I am the author of this work, which is being sold by [publisher] without my permission. I originally published this story in [date/year] on [name of site], and have provided a link to the original above. On request, I can provide documentation proving that I am the owner of the account that originally posted this story.

In the ASIN/ISBN-10 field, copy and paste the ID number from the pirated copy's URL. You'll find this ten-digit number in the Amazon URL after the word "product," as in the screenshot below. (If the URL extends beyond this number, you can ignore everything from the question mark on.) Once this number has been added, Amazon will pull the product information automatically and add it to the complaint form, so you can check the listing title and make sure it's correct.

Finally, add your contact information to the relevant fields, check the "I have read and accept the statements" box, and then click Submit. You should receive an email confirmation that Amazon has received the form.

Please share this information with your writer friends, keep an eye out for/report pirated works, and help us keep fanfiction free and legally protected!

NOTE: All of the above also applies to Amazon products featuring stolen artwork, etc., so fan artists should check too!

Draw my Handy Manny OC (I watched some Handy Manny on Disney+ this week on Wednesday (2/22/2023) while babysitting my younger cousins and found the show just as charming and entertaining as it was when I was a kid and it inspired me to create an OC for that show; for now, all I know is that my Handy Manny OC is an anthropomorphic talking tool (though idk what tool she would be yet), is female, is one of Manny's tools, is quite superstitious, keeps an accessory on her for good luck (still trying to figure what that accessory would be, but I'm thinking about a small cute scarf that she wears at all times), and I also ship her with Pat the Claw Hammer cuz I like Pat and he's one of my favorite characters on the show; pls don't judge me)

Hi there! I’m Audrey, an Illustrator, Graphic Designer by day and a grad student by night. Aside from my regular “doodling adventures” I love working with line illustrations, branding, storyboarding, and product design. My main inspirations are mysticism and the universe; I love for my illustrations to convey stories in which I blend everyday concepts into fairytales of a mystical nature. When I’m not drawing I’m either cooking or I’m just zoned out in my own world while watching a movie or a whimsical Korean drama.

A few reminders for you:

You are loved.

You are brave.

You are strong.

You are worthy.

You are enough.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but to all my fellow self shippers, I honestly think that your ships are way more valid than the canon/fanon pairings your f/os may be in either in canon or amongst the fandom. Imagine your f/o feels forced into those relationships when they only want to be with you and wished that their canon creators and/or their source material's fanbase could see that too. Especially if you've been invalidated for shipping with your f/o by some people in the fandom, your f/o can't stand that as it's true that you're the only one they'll ever want. They'll never in a million pick their canon s/o or any character the fandom pairs them with. They only want you. You're their one and only. Keep that in mind and don't let anyone tell you otherwise 💕

Children do not need to grow into being people, they’re already people and of course they have things to learn but they deserve to be treated with autonomy and respect. Especially queer and disabled children, we deserve better.

I saw a tweet asking why do people ship their ocs with canon so I'm going to answer as best as i can why i personally ship oc x canon

It's fun

I don't have energy to write my own stories

I'm not about to change the entirety of a canon character when an OC is much easier

OC can create new dynamics or motifs not featured in canon kinda like fill in the blanks

Sometimes a canon love interest is downright TERRIBLE so I end up feeling bad and decide to ship the unlucky canon with someone much better

Adding more women/rep in a existing team that lacks it; to give the token girl a female companion

OC can even address fix problems in the canon

I’m Maxy (she/her), I’m 21 years old and I’m from Brazil! I started studying visual communication specialized in animation in college on June 2021, but have been making digital art and working with commissions for a long time before that. I started most of my art social media around 2016, and gained most of my following from marvel and dc fanarts, mainly when Gal Gadot shared one of my drawings in 2019 to congratulate Brie Larson on the Captain Marvel release.  Most of the time, I’m drawing. But when I’m not, I love watching movies and tv shows with my family and hanging out with my friends, and I also love blasting music as loud as possible and dancing around in my room by myself.
