Discovered in a Colombian coal mine, its believed to have lived 59 million years ago, was 49 feet long, two feet wide, and weighed 2,500 lbs! Scientists have started to study how dogs take emotional cues from human voices. According to the head researcher: "We’d put an experienced dog up in the scanner, and he’d be up there sitting still. Then we’d bring into the room a less experienced dog. And he’d get so jealous! He just wanted to be on the scanner bed like the other dog. It became the place of happiness."

This trick works thanks to a groovy phenomenon called 'regelation', in which ice melts from the pressure applied by a wire and freezes again when the pressure is reduced. #regelation What's Happening? The balloon ice weights pull the copper wire through the block of ice. The pressure applied by the weights forms a liquid directly under the copper wire. As the wire travels downward the liquid refreezes above the wire and forms back into a solid. This is similar to ice skating where the blades of a skater melt the ice directly underneath, allowing the skater to move smoothly on a thin layer of water. #STEMists do the "E" in STEM!
