Born this day, John Woodward February 24, 1665 in Derbyshire, United Kingdom. At the age of 16, John Woodward became an apprentice to a linen draper in London, and then later he learned about medicine from Dr. Peter Barwick, who was a doctor for King Charles II. While studying medicine, Woodward found a fascination with fossils that eventually led him to his work with plants. In 1699, Woodward published his hydroponics experiments with spearmint. He tested different types of soil mixed with the water, and he learned plants with a less-pure water source grew better than plants grown in purely distilled water. Woodward concluded that certain substances with minerals in the water encouraged plant growth. Fellow STEMists who want to become botanists can be on their way to doing research and investigations through the engineering design process found in our monthly-themed Groovy Lab in a Box. Presented in partnership with @PopularMechanics magazine, this month's groovy box "What's The Matter?" is all about ice and the #StatesOfMatter. Sign up for May's monthly subscription to ensure you get this groovy box for the #STEMist in your life. Pull a wire through a block of ice? This trick works thanks to a groovy phenomenon called 'regelation', in which ice melts from the pressure applied by a wire and freezes again when the pressure is reduced. #regelation What's Happening? The balloon ice weights pull the copper wire through the block of ice. The pressure applied by the weights forms a liquid directly under the copper wire. As the wire travels downward the liquid refreezes above the wire and forms back into a solid. This is similar to ice skating where the blades of a skater melt the ice directly underneath, allowing the skater to move smoothly on a thin layer of water. #STEMists do the "E" in STEM! Reposted from @backyardastronomyguy - My regular post got cut off at 60 seconds, here’s the full video clip I intended to upload. —————- Here's my video capture of the start of today's Mercury transit of our Sun! Watch the whole video, I added a 2x Barlow for a closeup. Exciting to add Mercury to my list of planets I've seen in our Solar System! 😄🔭 . Academics in a Box Inc. was founded to inspire in students a desire to learn more about the sciences and humanities. Our products aim to allow students a new way to experience the beauty, poetry, and wonder of our universe through hands-on experience. Our foundation is based on the ideas that by “doing” and “experiencing,” students are more motivated to become inquisitive about the world around them. It’s this curiosity and creative thinking that are at the heart of developing a love of learning. The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) is used as a guide to ensure that our products supplement the learning that takes place in the classroom. We aim to take students beyond simple memorization of facts and figures by helping them gain a better understanding of significant science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) practice and application, as well as gain a deeper appreciation of the materials they are presented with.
