Not to state the obvious but (one of) the reason Paul moved out after what happened in ep 5 instead of after the nuke in ep 4 isnt because he was afraid of Carl but because he was afraid of how used to it he’d become. His own detachment and indifference to Carl’s crime was what truly horrified him.

The answer is mostly experience and constantly observing people in real life to learn about expressions, but knowing when to ‘dial up’ or ‘dial down’ emotion is very important! context is king- this is basically the same advice that Carl Barks gave on one of his reference sheets here (in a much more succinct manner!):
