mizu had been away in london for two and a half years. with the help of abijah fowler, sheโd located the other two men she spent so much time looking for. the last two men that could have potentially put her on this godforsaken earth.
she killed all three of them in one fell swoop.
as she stood on the boat taking her home, she couldnโt help but think about what awaited her. how was everyone doing? did akemi and taigen ever work it out? where was ringo? how was swordfather holding up? how was yui?
as yui came to mind, mizu felt her stomach drop slowly but surely.
yui.
mizuโs closest friend. her longest friend. the reason mizu spent so many nights of this four year journey restless. yui plagued the womanโs mind like death.
the two met shortly after mizu began living with master eiji. yui would periodically bring fresh fruits and vegetables for the old man to have. yui, only seven at the time, was so fascinated by the kid, she couldnโt help but want to be around all the time.
now, she was twenty-six. mizu left right after yui turned twenty-two, being twenty-one herself. compared to the fifteen years theyโd known each other beforehand, four years wasnโt long, and they saw each other briefly just before mizuโs impromptu trip to find the white men. to be apart from someone youโd grown up with, though, someone whoโd been like an extension of you, was like missing a part of you.
if nothing else, i hope sheโs happyโฆ wherever she is.
the journey was long, but after five and a half months at sea and three weeks of land travel, mizu stood in front of the small hut she grew up in.
dressed in her very old kimono and very tattered pants, her hair tied back in her typical ponytail, mizu felt stuck in place.
what if no oneโs home?
what if they turn me away?
what if something happened to them?
it wasnโt the first time she had these thoughts, but it was the first time they hit her this fierce.
with bated breath and a hand on the blade at her waist, mizu stepped forward and walked inside.
the first thing she noticed was the lack of fire, swordfather nowhere in sight. her heart beat roughly against her chest at the thought of where he could be, but the shallow breathing quickly pushed that thought aside.
wait, what?
as she turned, ignoring the whiplash, mizu spotted a shorter figure tucked away in the corner. the lighting was bad, but if she squinted, she could make out the wide eyes of the woman whoโd unknowingly stolen her heart.
she didnโt look much different. same pretty eyes, same pretty nose, same pretty lipsโฆ
โฆaccompanied by some swelling, bruising, and a small cut.
wait. what?
โmizu? is that you?โ yuiโs voice was so small, you almost couldnโt hear it.
โwhat happened to you?โ mizu responded, taking long strides to wrap her friend in her arms, almost shielding her from the world.
โyouโฆ youโre here? iโm not dreaming?โ yuiโs hands shook as they came to mizuโs face, one holding a damp cloth. the samurai took that very hand in her own.
โiโm here, yui. tell me what happened. who hurt you?โ her voice was soft, and yet the malice was clear as day.
โi- i canโt believe youโre here. i prayed everyday for you to come back to me. you look so tired and- and thin,โ as yui rambled, tears welled in her eyes. there was so much concern in her voice, and mizu wanted to draw blood.
you beautiful angel. youโre hurt and worrying about me.
โyui, look at me. who hurt you?โ
the blubbering woman blinked a few times. mizu grabbed her flushed cheeks to keep eye contact.
โi- you donโt need to worry about me, mizu. are you hungry? let me get you some food,โ yui tried to pulled away.
โyui.โ
she stopped walking. with a drop of her head and a trembling sigh, yui turned back around.
โโฆ my parents married me off a year ago-โ
โwhatโs his name?โ
โmizu, this is why i didnโt want to tell you! you donโt need to do anything, iโm fine!โ
the samurai, in the middle of storming out, stopped herself.
when did i become thisโฆ protective?
she didnโt get to think on it too much before yui grabbed her from behind, pulling mizuโs back to her front.
โhe only hit me a few times. a few days ago he got really drunk and he was upset about something and he justโฆ we ran into taigen in kohama the day after. taigen told him to stay away from me and then brought me here. mizu, i promise iโm okay. donโt leave meโฆ not again.โ
as the sun came down, two sat huddled by the fire. swordfather, ringo, and even taigen surprisingly welcomed her home with open arms.
"ya know, master, taigen really gave yui a run for her money missing you."
"what the hell are you talking about, ringo? i did not miss him. i only spent so much time here because there needed to be a man to take care of the house with this idiot was getting his blood revenge or whatever. we seriously thought you were dead."
"i'm sorry for worrying you all. and thank you, taigen, for taking care of yui and swordfather."
taigen didn't have a retort for that, and it was silent save for master eiji's "hmmm."
as the hours ticked away, it got quieter, taigen and ringo leaving for their own homes and master eiji retiring for the night.
mizu and yui were still sat together by the small fire.
i'm gonna do it. she deserves to know.
"yui, I..." she started.
"yes?" the aforementioned woman looked up to mizu, eyes wide with innocence and happiness.
"uhm...i-"
"iโm so in love you, mizu. did you know that?"
wait... what?
"i- i'm not a... man," mizu had to force it out. she expected the joy in yui's face to dissipate, but the eyes staring at her didn't flash with any anger, distrust, or confusion.
"i know that, mizu," yui's lips curved in a small smile. mizu stood in shock.
"wait, but how? did you see me naked? you can't be in love with me, yui. i lied to you. for years."
yui giggled at her before grimacing softly.
"i guess that means the feeling isn't mutual then, huh?" her tone was light, but the hurt was written all over her face.
"no, mizu started, cradling the soft skin of yui's face, "no, no, no, yui. i love you more than anything in this world. i live and breathe for you."
"then how can you sit here and tell me that i can't love you and then turn around and tell me you love me?"
mizu sighed. she's never been good at this whole being in love thing.
"it's just... i've been in love before and it didn't turn out all that great. i just don't understand how you could... when did you... have you always liked women?"
now it was yui's turn to sigh, "why do you think i fought with my parents so much when we were teenagers? 'yui, you must stop with this foolishness, you will marry a man and bare me grandchildren!' 'but mama, i don't like boys! i like-" she cut herself off with a loud slap to the back of her hand. despite the seriousness of what she just told mizu, that smile was back on yui's face.
"what... what do we do now?" mizu had an inkling of a feeling as to what, but she still wanted to be sure.
"well," yui sounded cheeky, "it'd be really nice if you would kiss me."
and with a bright red face, mizu did just that.
after kissing for several minutes (not nearly long enough if you asked mizu), the two prepared to sleep. mizu snuck her futon out of the room she shared with master eiji and yui layered a couple of old blankets on top. as the pair laid together, mizu couldn't think of anything other than how happy she felt in that moment. and then she had a thought.
"you didn't tell me how you knew i wasn't a man, yui." as she snuggled closer to mizu, yui chuckled lightly.
"oh, my love, i've always known."
"yes, but ho-"
she was silenced with a kiss.
โsleep, mizu.โ

Teenage boys can jerk off to empty eyed soulless anime waifu hentai girls getting humiliated or murdered, but God forbid a teenage girl imagine Sasuke and Naruto getting married.
One of these is considered normal and the other is considered creepy, and it's not what it SHOULD be.

Book Title: The Mole Theory (Non-idol!Park Sunghoon x gn!reader)
Genre: Fluff, reincarnation/soulmate-ish? AU, college AU (Valentineโs fic)
Proofread: No (if any inconsistencies, especially with pronouns, let me know.)
Word Count: 2.7k
Now playing: โApocalypseโ by Cigarettes After Sex
Content Warnings: this is a work of fiction and is not meant to assume how any real, not fiction person acts in their personal life, gn!reader, 3rd person POV (they/them used to reference reader), fluff, slight angst, reader initially thinks theyโre not meant to be loved (incorrect for reader and for you), Y/n not used but โ____โ in place of a name, reader has two moles (1 on lips, 1 on underside of their jaw) but they arenโt visible unless someoneโs really looking for them, random character โAshโ is readerโs friend, awkward kiss scene right at the end.
Authorโs Note: Iโm really nervous abt writing this cus Iโve never written for a real person before๐ญthen my irl pointed out that when I write, I should write what I want cus itโs for me and not anyone else. Itโs a little late in the day but still Valentineโs Day where I am, so enjoy! (Also, this is the specific photo Iโm using for reference for his lil moles.๐ฝ๐ฝ)
____ was convinced they werenโt meant to be loved in any life. But they came to terms with that a very long time ago. It wasnโt something to stress over for them. It was just one of those things that simply wasnโt meant to be. This was unknowingly confirmed when a friend told them about the โmole theory.โ
โThat doesnโt even sound like a real thing.โ They gave Ash a look of disbelief as they took a sip of their drink. The cafe around them served as a comfy hang out spot the pair frequented before and after class โ todayโs case was the former. Ash got her usual of a simple hot coffee with a couple of sugar packets and a splash of milk while ____ got their favorite.
โI swear it is!โ Ash laughs, setting her drink down and pulling out her phone to open Google. โLook,โ she handed them the phone, โitโs this myth or legend-like thing that says wherever you have a mole is where your lover in a past life kissed you the most! Isnโt it romantic? I mean at this point-โ
____ sort of tuned Ash out as they sat their own drink to the side and scrolled through whatever article Ash had opened. It said practically the same as whatever Ash was spewing โ at least they assumed it did. They really werenโt able to listen to her drone on about her boyfriend while reading an article.
โOkay, soโ ____ cuts Ash off before she can get too deep into a spill about how cute she thought one of her boyfriendโs habits was, โwhatโs the point of this again?โ
They hand her phone back to her as she deadpans a little. โDid you not hear the first half of what I said?โ When met with a blank stare and a small shrug from ____, Ash sighs and repeats a summary of what sheโd been saying. โI said, if this legend is true then it basically proves the existence of past lives! I mean, everyone has moles. Plus, itโs just so romantic to imagine that you were loved so deeply in a past life that it left a permanent mark on you in the next,โ she practically swoons.
โI donโt have any moles,โ ____ points out. They look down at their arms, twisting them side to side a bit to reveal skin with as many moles as a block of concrete. They go over their body in their mind, not recalling a single one that theyโve been able to see.
โI can almost guarantee you have at least one mole somewhere on your body,โ Ash says with a confident expression, her arms crossed over her chest and her body leaning back in the booth.
____ just shakes their head with another shrug. โCanโt say Iโve ever seen one. Guess love wasnโt meant to find me in this life or the last.โ They say it so casually and with such honest belief that Ash can only stare at them with a lightly incredulous look. But before Ash can rebuttal her friendโs self-deprecating words, ____โs phone buzzes and chimes with an alarm. โThatโs my alarm to head to class. See you later?โ they say, grabbing their drink and their bag without another word.
However, as much as they donโt want to admit it, the thought that they werenโt loved in this life or the next weighed on them a little. They thought back to the times they couldโve used a partnerโs shoulder to cry on and the holidays theyโve been missing out on couple activities during. They would always tease Ash about her being excited to celebrate things like Valentineโs Day when her and her boyfriend could just show that same appreciation for each other every day (not that the couple didnโt anyway).
Then their mind wandered back to the mole theory in specific. They realized just about everyone she knew had at least one mole on their arm, leg, or even their collarbone. But they canโt recall a single one on their own body and face. The other people mustโve been loved lots in their past lives. Park Sunghoon, for example, has at least three just on his face. ____ wouldnโt be shocked if they were scattered all over the guy. Whatโs not to love?
Sunghoon and ____ were friends. The two werenโt as close as he was with the boys he grew up with, but they were close enough that they would sit next to each other and have idle chats if either one of them were in the same place without any of their other friends. It didnโt happen often. However even with their interactions being as rare as they were, it wasnโt hard for ____โs feelings to be affected.
Sunghoon was easy to be around. He was easy to talk to, very calm (with the exception of being around his friends), and was a great listener. Although ____ couldโve sworn he mightโve been spacing out several times prior, staring unblinkingly at different points of rooms and at different people. (They would bet their life on catching him staring at their lips once in a class the two shared, but it was more than likely a coincidence.) They shook the thought of Sunghoon out of their mind as much as possible as they walked to their class.
Valentineโs Day rolled around a couple days after Ash and ____โs cafe conversation. Ash and ____ had exchanged the small valentines theyโd had a tradition of giving each other since childhood, Ash and her boyfriend going out for the rest of the day afterwards. ____ had exams coming up soon, so they decided to head to the library for a few hours to prepare.
It was quiet, as per usual. There were some simplistic, non-distracting valentines decorations scattered around. ____ nodded in a polite hello to the librarians as they made their way to their favorite table. They could count on one hand the amount of people in the library on the love holiday, excluding their self and the librarians. Even if they were included, ____ wouldnโt need ten fingers to count the current capacity of the building.
____ had been reading over notes and copying them down a couple times each for about an hour before an unexpected voice softly spoke up.
โCan I sit with you?โ
____ jumped a bit at the voice, not expecting anyone to approach them. What was even more unexpected โ but currently happening โ was to see that the voice belonged to Sunghoon.
They quickly composed themself, giving a small smile and a polite nod. Sunghoon mirrored the smile and took the seat opposite ____. They had to admit to themself that a slight feeling of surprise fell over them at seeing him here instead of him being out with someone. With who, they werenโt sure, but they certainly didnโt expect him to be with them in the library.
The curiosity scratched at their mind for a while before they finally decided to quietly ask, โNo holiday plans?โ
Sunghoon looked up from his own notes and shook his head a little. โNo one I felt like going out with. You?โ His tone matched theirs, the softness in his voice giving them butterflies.
____ copied his head shake with a slight smile. โNo one felt like being with me.โ
Sunghoon seems to consider their words for a moment before muttering, โI felt like it.โ
This surprised them a little. Heโd just said there wasnโt anyone he had wanted to go out with, but he admitted he felt like being with them. The admittance, no matter the intended meaning, brought a wave of flustered heat to their face. They quickly looked back to their notes, a small โohโ escaping them in response.
The pair went back to their respective note taking, working in silence. At least, Sunghoon had returned to working. ____ couldnโt help but repeat his words in their head, sneaking a glance at him after a while. Their eyes were quickly drawn to the trio of his most prominent moles, darting between them as if studying them more intently than the notes for their tests. Their eyes started at the one just to the side of the bridge of his nose, on his right side but on their left. It was probably the darkest of the three, yet the second was the most prominent. It rests on the opposite cheek from the first mole. It would be one of the first details of his face that anyone would notice. Their gaze then traveled to the third mole. It was the lightest and the smallest, under the same eye as the first one. It was also closest to his lips, probably the second feature anyoneโs eyes would be drawn to.
The mole theory rushes to the forefront of their mind. The first mole had obviously been the place Sunghoonโs past lover had kissed the most of the three, the darkness making this evident. They imagined their own kiss making the spot even darker in his next life, this thought making way for the thought of his lips leaving a love mark on ____ in their own next life. They tried to force the thought out of their mind, but it only evolved into them trying and failing to not think about how his lips would feel on theirs. Would that be a place he preferred to kiss often? Would it be often enough to leave a mark after this life comes to an end? The swirling of these thoughts in their mind made ____ practically rip their gaze away from him and make an attempt to pretend to focus their attention on their notes for another half hour.
They eventually give up with a small sigh, leaning back in their seat. They let their head fall back, and their eyes close. Sunghoon takes this as a sign of frustration with studying and lifts his gaze to them.
โFrustrated with notes?โ His voice reaches them, but they donโt let their eyes go back to him knowing theyโd get flustered and warm all over again. Instead they decide to let him believe that and just offer a slight nod. A few beats of silence pass between them before the scraping of a chair being pushed away from a table and back to it sounds out. ____ thinks he just decided to leave, until they hear the chair next to them make the same noises. They open their eyes and see Sunghoon being exceptionally close to their side, moving their notes close to him and reading over them.
โWhat are you doing?โ ____โs whisper is full of shock as Sunghoon continues to read over their notes.
After a second, he looks over to them with another signature soft smile. โHelping you with your work. You said you were frustrated, right?โ
____ has to force their mind to focus on his question instead of the scent of his cologne and the warmth of his arm so close to theirs. They only manage a soft nod, not trusting their voice to give out on them even in a whisper. They decide their mind is playing tricks on them when it sees his eyes flick to their lips for less than a millisecond before he turns to their notes again. ____ decides they might be going insane as they see the very tips of his ears glow a soft red.
Sunghoon and ____ go over the notes for another hour before they both decide to be done with work for the day. ____ has to beat another bout of butterflies down as Sunghoon suggests getting a post-study snack together.
They walk to the campus convenience store with light conversation filling the occasional silence. Nothing of major importance is said before or while they get their snacks. Until the two decide to eat their snacks in the park. They have a seat at one of the benches โ the warmth and cologne ____ felt from him before returning even more intensely with how small the bench was โ and eat their snacks in relative silence.
After a few minutes, ____ decides to bring up the mole theory out of sheer curiosity for his opinion. โAsh โ my friend, I think youโve met โ told be about it the other day.โ
โIt sounds interesting. I like it,โ he admits with a soft smile. โItโs romantic.โ
โThatโs what Ash said,โ ____ nods, โbut I kinda thought it was silly. Itโs a less convincing argument than deja vu.โ ____ continues their small rant while Sunghoon quietly gazes at them in listening. โI mean, practically everyone has that and canโt really explain it. At least not with a sure fire round of solid evidence. Not everyone has moles. For example, me. Thereโs not a single mole anywhere on my body.โ
Sunghoonโs eyebrows furrow slightly, and he tilts his head with a confused expression. โWhat are you talking about? You have at least two.โ
____ turns their attention to him with their own confused expression. โWhat are you talking about? Iโve never seen one and Iโve kinda lived in this body for my whole life.
____โs heart nearly stops as Sunghoon reaches up and leaves the lightest touch on the underside of the left jaw bone. โThatโs one of them. Itโs darker thanโฆโ He moves his touch to the very edge of ____โs bottom lip, directly in the middle. โโฆthat one.โ His voice is considerably softer than it was moments ago, and his touch manages to be even lighter. It was almost as though he was afraid being too loud or too rough would break the very world around them.
____โs whole body feels like itโs on fire. Controlling their voice as much as possible (even though it still comes out weak and almost shaky), they ask, โHow did you even see those?โ
Sunghoonโs touch finally falls from their skin, and they miss it immediately. He turns his attention to a very interesting patch of grass between his feet. ____ notices the tinge of red on the tips of his ears again. โIโฆ sometimes I space out. In the class we share together, you sit on the other side of the class, facing me but a couple rows back.โ ____โs mind fries at the fact that he pays any attention to them at all besides when he spaces out. โOne time, youโd switched seats with the person that does sit right in front of me. You were close enough now that I could see that one,โ he points to his own lips this time, still not looking in their direction, โand now I canโt help but notice it every time I see you. Then earlier, in the library, I saw this one,โ he points at his jaw where the mole would be on him.
Silence settles over them, a certain tension filling the air. ____ lets it linger before speaking up. โDo you believe it?โ
That confused look raises to Sunghoonโs expression again, and he finally turns to them again. โWhat?โ
โThe mole theory. You said you liked it, and you thought it was romantic. But do you believe it?โ
Sunghoon considers their words for a moment. โI guess so. Why?โ
โWellโฆ Iโve decided I believe in another theory. My theory is that whoever left the love marks on you from a past life is the same person youโre meant to be with in every life. I also believe that the kiss from your past โ and destined โ lover feels different in those places than if someone else kissed them.โ Itโs ____โs turn to be intrigued by a grass patch. The suggestion makes the air feel even heavier than before.
____ is considering imploding right then and there until they hear Sunghoon speak up. โTest it.โ
They turn their gaze to him to see his usual calm expression returned to his face. โWhat?โ
โTest it. Test your theory.โ He leans a little bit closer, as if inviting the test. A small smirk grows on his face the more ____ stares at him in shock mixing with a feeling of being flustered. โOr should I test it for you?โ
He lets ____ process his words for as long as they need, each otherโs eyes glancing towards the otherโs lips. ____ only gives a small nod and leans into Sunghoonโs kiss.
They think their mind must surely be playing tricks on them when they swear they can feel moles they hadnโt noticed before grow warm under his lips being on theirs and his hand gently grazing their jaw.
